Very briefly: Sanskrit can be written in many different scripts, including devanāgarī (देवनागरी), which is used to write Hindi and many other languages of South Asia. To make reading easier for those of us who are more accustomed to using Latin-based alphabets (English and most European languages use Latin-based alphabets), there is a transliteration system known as IAST (International Alphabet of Sanskrit Transliteration) to correctly and accurately represent, in Latin-based characters, the sounds of the Sanskrit as originally written in a different script.
